A Study of the Co-occurring Use of Sentence-Final Particles in Chinese from the Perspective of the Theory of Functional Grammar (TFG)

Abstract

The study of sentence-final particles in Chinese has always been an active area of research in the field of Chinese language studies. Previous researchers have conducted extensive and fruitful explorations of this subject, basing their studies on a range of different linguistic theories. As a result, sentence-final particles have been endowed with an array of functional features. However, these functional features have been posed as operating at a variety of different linguistic levels, and this has made the task of analyzing sentence-final particles increasingly complex. Taking up this task, this article summarizes the results of research in the field on a number of frequently-used final-particles, providing a conceptual overview of these findings. To do this, it (1) builds on an initial conceptual framework and taxonomy that describes categories of grammatical “mood” and (2) adopts the parameters of [+main syntactic distribution], [+modal classification], [+illocutionary function], [+illocutionary modification], [+subjectivity], and [+intersubjectivity]. Finally, it engages the Theory of Functional Grammar (TFG) to explain the underlying reasons for co-occurring sentence-final particles.

기능문법 이론(TFG)의 관점에서 본 중국어 문말 조사의 중복 사용

초록

중국어 구말조사에 대한 연구는 중국어학계의 지속적인 주목을 받아 왔으며, 선행 연구자들은 다양한 언어학 이론을 바탕으로 이에 대한 유의미한 탐구를 수행해 왔다. 그 결과 중국어 구말조사에는 여러 기능적 특징이 부여되었으나, 서로 다른 층위의 기능적 특징들이 혼재되면서 오히려 논의가 복잡해지는 문제도 나타났다. 본고는 ‘어기’범주의 초기 개념과 분류를 토대로, [+주요 문장 유형 분포], [+양태 범주], [+발화행위적 기능], [+발화행위력 조정], [+주관성], 그리고 [+상호 주관성]을 매개 변수로 삼아 학계의 일반적인 구말 어기사 연구 성과를 정리·귀납하고, 나아가 기능문법 이론(TFG)과의 결합을 통해 중국어 구말조사의 중복 사용 원인을 구명하고자 한다.
